Hierarchical Testing of Variable Importance

چکیده

A frequently encountered challenge in high-dimensional regression is the detection of relevant variables. Variable selection suffers from instability and the power to detect relevant variables is typically low if predictor variables are highly correlated. When taking the multiplicity of the testing problem into account, the power diminishes even further. To gain power and insight, it can be advantageous to look for influence not at the level of individual variables but rather at the level of clusters of highly correlated variables. We propose a hierarchical approach. Variable importance is first tested at the coarsest level, corresponding to the global null hypothesis. If possible, the method tries then to attribute any effect to smaller sub-clusters or even individual variables. The smallest possible clusters which still exhibit a significant influence on the response variable are retained. It is shown that the proposed testing procedure controls the family-wise error rate at a prespecified level, simultaneously over all resolution levels. The method has comparable power to Bonferroni-Holm on the level of individual variables and dramatically larger power for coarser resolution levels. The best resolution level is selected adaptively.

Design Considerations in Using 1149.1 as a Backplane Test Bus by

Abstract. Hierarchical IEEE Std.1149. backplane test access has become increasingly accepted as a test strategy for testing boards/modules within a system environment and for facilitating field level support, providing that important architectural decisions are made during the system architecture design phase. This paper describes the effectiveness of boundaryscan at the system level and the im...

Testing a Hierarchical Model of Distress Tolerance

Distress tolerance (DT) has been suggested as an individual difference factor with transdiagnostic importance. To date, determining the transdiagnostic status of DT has been limited due to the lack of consensus regarding the construct’s conceptualization. Zvolensky et al. (Current Directions in Psychological Science 19:406–410, 2010) developed a hierarchical model of DT that seeks to unify diff...

Highlighting the Importance of the Vegetation Variable on Distributed Land surface temperature on different land use/land cover in Javanrud city range

In environmental models, Vegetations are considered as an important part in controlling environmental changes. To determine the importance of vegetation on land surface temperature (LST), preliminary preprocessing was performed on Landsat 8 image and a split window procedure was used to determine surface temperature. Temperature difference with the surrounding synoptic stations was estimated to...

Improvement of Hierarchical Clustering Results by Refinement of Variable Types and Distance Measures

Hierarchical clustering method is used to assign observations into clusters further connected to form a hierarchical structure. Observations in the same cluster are close together according to the predetermined distance measure, while observations belonging to different clusters are afar. This paper presents an implementation of specific distance measure used to calculate distances between obse...
